“Japanese Design Today 100”Exhibition

The Japan Foundation and the Consulate General of Japan in Guangzhou join up to organize the exhibition “Japanese Design Today 100”, which would be opened in C4 Space, Redtory, December,10th 2016.

 

It was curated by KASHIWAGI, Hiroshi, the famous design critic, FUKAGAWA, Masafumi, a curator, HAGIWARA, Shu, the stationer of TSUKUSHI and design director, and  KAWAKAMI, Noriko, the associate director of 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT. Not only to display the foremost designs and the newest trend in Japan, this exhibition aims to showcase the modern Japanese culture, which have a great effect on designs in China and western countries. It improves the development of thoughts, exchange of ideas and technique and so on.

 

Focusing mainly on the designs born after the year 2010, 100 exquisite Japanese products were chosen to be showcased around the world, such as some works from well-known designers,  Issey Miyake and Nakamura Yoshifumi, so on and so forth.As the prelude of modern design, the 11 works focused on the classic modern design. They explore the root of Japanese design ideas and pay honor to masters. The other 89 works could be divided into 9 kinds: furniture and house-ware, tableware and cookware, apparel and accessories, children, stationery, hobbies, health care, disaster relief and transportation. All of those represent the essence of Japanese designs of daily life and reflect directly people’s hobbies and lifestyle.

 

For this exhibition, there are three guests invited to hold lectures in Redtory, they are Professor Zhang Fuye from the school of art of Tsinghua University, Noriko Kawakami, the associate director of 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT, Wang Shouzhi, the famous scholar of history of design. There would be in-depth discussions about the ethos of eastern aesthetics, the supreme element of Japanese design and the development of design and so on.

It  lasts until December, 30th 2016.



The Introductions of Curators

 

KASHIWAGI, Hiroshi

Design Critic. Professor of Musashino Art University. He is specialized in history of contemporary design. He was born in Kobe in 1946 and graduated in Musashino Art University. He is famous for books  《家事的政治学》青土社、《现代设计批判》岩波书店、《“隔断”的文化论》讲谈社、《玩物草子》平凡社、《侦探小说的室内》、《从日记看文豪的房间》白水社、《我的家》亚纪书房and so on. He also is the supervisor of several exhibition, such as“田中一光回顾展” in Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo.

FUKAGAWA, Masafumi

Curator. He was born in 1958 and graduated from the department of literature and in Kyushu University. After that he graduated from the same school, as a postgraduate of philosophy. Mostly he curated exhibitions and wrote articles about the theory of design and photography.  He had organized exhibitions about design, such as “包豪斯,艺术教育的革命与实验”、“大家的设计”、and co-organized “WA:现代日本的设计与和谐精神”. Also the exhibitions of photography he had organized are  “现代写真的动向”、“写真游戏” and so on. He is also famous for 《光之计划》 and the book he translated 《摄影的哲学思考》, which was written by Vilem Flusser.

HAGIWARA, Shu

Design Director. The professor of department of design in Meisei University. He was born in 1961 and graduated as a visual communication design student from Musashino Art University. He used to work in DNP, Living Design Center Ozone and after 2014, he started his own work. He has been the participant in organizing exhibitions, making commodity, opening stores and publishing books and so on. The programs he has promoted are the TSUKUSHI stationary, KODO`MONO`KOTO,かみの工作所 and so on. He also is famous for books 9坪的家》、《设计态度》 and so on..

KAWAKAMI, Noriko

Journalist. The associate director of 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT. She used to work in the editorial board of magazine AXIS, which is about design. From 1944 to 1996, she took part in the Japan- Italy cooperation as the editorial director with Domus Academy. From 2007, she became the associate director of 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT. She was famous for Realizing Design, which was published by TOTO, and co-authored the book《由内向外看世界》, with 佐藤大 , which was published by 日经BP社. She also edited the book 《天童木工》, which was published by 美术出版社 and so on..

The Introduction of Speakers


Zhang Fuye

The professor of school of art in Tsinghua University and doctoral supervisor. He was famous for his monograph, such as History of Foreign Industrial Arts, History of Decorative Art in the World, History of Western modern design, Japanese Art and other teaching materials.

KAWAKAMI, Noriko
Journalist. The associate director of 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT. She used to work in the editorial board of magazine AXIS, which is about design. Wang Shouzh
Famous scholar of history of design. He graduated from the Graduate School of Wuhan University. In 1980s, he used to be the deputy director of School of Design in Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts. In 1987, he studied and taught theory of design as the Fulbright Scholar, in Westminster School of Pennsylvania State University and Madison Academy of University of Wisconsin. In 1988, he taught theory of design in Art Center College of Design, Pasadena, the most authoritative school in America. In 1933, he became the tenure, and taught theory of modern design and history of modern design in the school. He also taught history of design in California Institute of the Arts, Otis Institute of Art & Design, Southern California Institute of Architecture and University of Southern California. From 2011, he became the director of School of Changjiang Art and Design in Shantou University.


The introduction of the Japan Foundation 

The Japan Foundation is a specialized public organization founded in 1972 with the purpose of promoting international understanding through cultural exchange. It has carried out programs in a variety of fields, engaging in international dialogue through arts and cultural exchanges, promoting Japanese language education overseas, and supporting Japanese studies and intellectual exchange. As part of visual arts programs, they organize traveling exhibitions with artworks from their own collection that tour countries throughout the world. The content of these exhibitions is diverse, ranging from paintings and photographs to Japanese dolls, craft and design. .
